A Beast the Color of Winter: The Mountain Goat Observed by Douglas H. Chadwick, "In North America there is one large animal that belongs almost entirely to the realm of towering rock and unmelting snow. Pressing hard against the upper limit of life's possibilities, it exists higher and steeper throughout the year than any other big beast on the continent. It is possibly the best and most complete mountaineer that ever existed on any continent. Oreamnos americanus is its scientific name. Its common name is mountain goat." Resourceful, belligerent, and unbelievably sure-footed, the mountain goat is a white-coated survivor from the Ice Age. Oreamnos american us shares its dizzying alpine world with elk, eagles, bighorn sheep, and grizzlies. This first full-length book on the mountain goat offers a superbly written portrait of its life, habits, and environment. Douglas H. Chadwick tracked mountain goat herds for seven years, and his observations are richly textured and replete with fascinating and dramatic details. We learn of the mountain goats' lives from birth to adulthood, their feeding habits, unique social behavior and courtship rituals, and their long history. Chadwick also makes clear the troubling and escalating impact of the modern world on the mountain goat's wilderness home.
White Goats, White Lies: The Abuse of Science in Olympic National Park by R. Lee Lyman, Although mountain goats are native to the Cascade range, they do not appear to have been present in Washington states's Olympic Mountains during historic times. Wildlife managers introduced goats in small numbers in what soon became Olympic National Park in 1925 and sporadically thereafter for the next twenty years. According to a 1981 statement by the National Park Service, the mountain goats in Olympic National Park "appear to be significantly altering the alpine ecosystem the park was designed to protect and preserve. As a result, park managers have argued that the goats must be eradicated". An eradication program has been in place for several years now. White Goats, White Lies does not argue for or against eradication of "exotics" in Olympic and other national parks. Rather it examines the science used to justify the current park position and questions the extent to which science is an afterthought in national park decisions.
Boer goat - The Boer goat was developed in South Africa in the early 1900s for meat production. Their name is derived from the Dutch word "Boer" meaning farmer. Mountain goat - The Rocky Mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus), often called simply mountain goat, is a large hoofed mammal found only in North America. Although it resembles a goat, it is actually more closely related to the antelope family. Boer Republics - The Boer Republics were independent self governed republics established by local Boers of Trekboer (migrating farmer) descent beginning in 1795 against Dutch rule & later in response to British colonialism as Voortrekkers during the period of the Great Trek beginning in 1835. The Boer Republics ceased to exist in 1900 (though only officially in 1902 with the Vereenigning Peace Treaty) when they were conquered by the British at the conclusion of the Anglo-Boer War. Fainting goat - A fainting goat is a breed of domestic goat whose external muscles freeze for roughly ten seconds when the goat is startled. Though painless, this generally results in the animal collapsing on its side.
